The City of South Bend implemented an IoT system, a network of wireless sensors, that monitors sewer water levels and redirects sewage flow away from the river. These 150 sensors, located under manhole covers, monitor water-levels and broadcast data to city workers every five-minutes.

South Bend, Indiana installed innovative smart sewer system technology to monitor and regulate wastewater levels, resulting in reductions in sewer overflows and significant savings for the City. The City of South Bend completed the installation of the network of pressure transducers, flow sensors and smart valves to measure water levels and redirect wastewater from trunk lines approaching capacity to less stressed lines.
