State-owned utility South East Water developed Tank Talk technology to enable remote-controlled water releases. Yarra Ranges will distribute smart tanks to households near catchment areas in 2022. Recipients can pre-program or manually release excess water into local waterways used by dwindling platypus populations. Household smart tanks and two smart storage units improve the shire's biodiversity while reducing flood damage.

Smart water tank to help vulnerable platypus - Council

Yarra Ranges Council, in collaboration with South East Water and the University of Melbourne’s Waterways Ecosystem Research Group, Melbourne Water, has unveiled a new water system set to support fragile platypus habitats.
