City-owned Hastings Utilities funded a 6,048-panel farm capable of powering up to 500 homes per year. Residents were offered opportunities to purchase or subscribe to solar energy up to 80% of their household energy usage. The purchase option provides exclusive offsets for $384 per panel. Subscribers receive portions of panel energy starting from $4.52 per month. Hastings Utilities offers an online forecasting tool that assists with offset decisions.

Hastings is moving forward with plans for the first phase of a community solar farm. It's been nearly a year in the making. Hastings has decided to build the community solar farm just northwest of the airport. A year and coming, Hastings City Council took their first step Tuesday towards the start of construction by awarding the contract to GenPro Energy Solutions based out of South Dakota.
