The Portland Parks & Recreation’s Urban Forestry division launched the Yard Tree Giveaway program. This year the program will be giving away 1,800 free trees and every household is eligible to receive as many as two free trees to plant on private property. The program was created to boost the city's canopy, increase the amount of greenery, improve the accessibility of shade, and reduce heat effects.

Do you live in Portland? And do you like trees? If so, you're eligible for up to two free trees from the city. The 5th annual Yard Tree Giveaway is a program from the Parks and Recreation's Urban Forestry division. The department is handing out 1,800 trees this year over the course of five events, starting Saturday and continuing through November. Parks and Rec says the giveaway "helps to increase tree cover across the city and makes trees accessible to everyone.
