Portsmouth, VA demonstrates municipal broadband network prototype for subsidized housing units
The city of Portsmouth formed a broadband authority in order to provide internet connectivity to residents by creating a municipal broadband network. The city strategically installed over 300 public Wi-Fi access points to provide free broadband service for more than 1,000 public housing units. The project cost approximately $750,000 in CARES Act funding, improves telehealth services in disadvantaged neighborhoods, and serves as a proof of concept for the city's municipal broadband network.

Portsmouth, VA integrates AudioEye accessibility tools into updated municipal website
Portsmouth's IT team worked with CivicPlus to make the city website more accessible and less labor-intensive to update. The AudioEye platform automates website updates in response to regulatory changes and new assistive equipment. Portsmouth's website features the AudioEye Ally Toolbar, which allows users to customize their experiences. The Ally Toolbar can alter text size, adjust color contrast, and convert text into speech.
