Vancouver, BC responds to increase in single-room occupancy fires with fire safety pilot

Vancouver, BC Fire Safety Single-Room Occupancy Pilot

In Arbeit

City officials approved a CAD 110,000 pilot following a doubling in SRO fires from 2018 to 2022. The one-year project will build partnerships between the fire department and fire safety peers in 18 SRO buildings. Each fire safety peer works with firefighters on outreach and training fellow residents about fire hazards. The fire safety pilot also calls for annual fire drills, improved escape plans, and ongoing surveys of resident concerns.
