Edmonton, AB addresses unsafe vacant properties with Community Property Safety Team pilot
Edmonton, AB Community Property Safety Team Pilot
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) found that the most common setting for fire deaths in 2021 was unsecured vacant lots. The CPST pilot running through 2023 orders vacant property owners to secure entrances to their properties with wood. An escalating series of orders for non-compliance range from fencing to demolition with expenses billed to the offending owners. EFRS and the Community Standards and Neighbourhoods team also encourage owners to repurpose or sell properties when feasible.
