Long Beach, CA develops Digital Rights Platform for public understanding of smart city technology
Long Beach partnered with Coding it Forward fellows on a 10-week development process for the platform's prototype. Digital Transparency in the Public Realm (DTPR) signage was placed near smart pedestrian counters and license plate readers. Passersby scanned QR codes on the signs to access easy-to-understand information on data collection and usage methods. Future plans for the first-of-its-type platform include translation into three languages and entries for other technologies in use.

Long Beach, CA monitors progress on COVID-19 recovery efforts with its Recovery Dashboard
The city introduced the dashboard to track projects funded by the 2021 Long Beach Recovery Act (LBRA). The Recovery Dashboard opens with total ARPA funds allocated and spent in three focus areas - Healthy & Safe Community, Economic Recovery, and Securing Our City's Future. A Program Progress tab lists every LBRA program and whether they are preparing to launch, live, or complete. Focus area tabs show the demographics of program beneficiaries and map programs by ZIP code.

The Long Beach Collaboratory (LB Co-Lab) focuses on four neighborhoods with low connectivity and high unemployment. Each neighborhood group of up to 10 residents identifies technological solutions for local issues. LB Co-Lab provides a $1,000 stipend per member and free training during the design process. Participating groups trial their proposed solutions and work with Long Beach officials on opportunities to expand their pilots.

The city of Long Beach is partnering with Mercedes-Benz and Xtelligent to launch a traffic signal pilot program intended to reduce street congestion and pollution. The city will deploy a fleet of up to 50 smart vehicles and artificial intelligence software that will communicate real-time traffic data to traffic signals. City planners and engineers will use the shared data to measure traffic congestion, calculate carbon emissions, and develop transportation policies.

Long Beach, CA adds BizCare Program features in support of businesses impacted by COVID-19
The BizCare Program started with a dedicated hotline for questions about public health guidelines and pandemic assistance. Long Beach identified four areas of the city hardest hit by COVID-19 for weekly pop-ups staffed by the Department of Economic Development. These pop-ups offered grant application assistance and operational advice in multiple languages. A BizCare Outreach Team was later created for targeted engagement in areas not served by the pop-ups.
