The two-year pilot involves 125 participants selected randomly from the foundation's previous aid recipients. Qualifying residents are working mothers who reside in four neighborhoods with low average household incomes. Each participant receives $1,000 per month via direct deposit or debit card for use without restrictions. County officials and the MCF funded the pilot to evaluate how universal income can elevate recipients out of poverty.
