Rockhampton, QLD determines the viability of organic waste recycling with curbside collection pilot
Rockhampton Council will choose 750 households in three areas for organic waste collections. Trial areas will represent diverse property types, street layouts, and demographics to generate data for program development. Randomly selected households receive bins for either food and yard waste or yard-only waste. Council officials hope to divert approximately 50% of organic waste sent to landfills while creating new jobs at processing facilities.

Council leaders worked with CQUniversity on the dedicated program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants. CQUniversity holds weekly discussions with participants along with events featuring business leaders and innovators. An initial cohort of 15 students will complete the First Nations Business Program by the end of 2021.

The 1.3-megawatt installation will supply power to the Glenmore Water Treatment Plant. Solgen Energy is using 3,042 double-sided panels to maximize solar energy capture for the facility. The surface underneath the panels is made with recycled glass to reflect light back to the panels. Council officials approved a project plan with space for additional panels in the future. Rockhampton will reduce annual energy costs by up to $500,000 AUD once the installation is complete.

Rockhampton, QLD builds momentum for eNotice signups with shopping voucher drawing
The council held a drawing for a $500 AUD voucher to a local shop of the winner's choice. Each entry was created when a resident signed up for eNotices of council bills rather than mailed statements. Rockhampton residents can pay bills ranging from animal registration fees to property taxes online with eNotices. Council leaders introduced the drawing to reduce paperwork and improve the timeliness of bill payments while supporting a lucky resident around Christmas.

Rockhampton, QLD develops smart parking system in its Central Business District
Visitors to the council's CBD can find and pay for parking through the PayStay app. Parking vacancies near shops and offices are updated live thanks to 500 in-ground sensors. The sensors use solar-powered devices in local sign poles to connect with PayStay via public Wi-Fi. This system identifies available unloading zones and assists with parking enforcement. Council officials approved digital signs outside of car parks to indicate vacancies for those without the app.
