Kingston received £250,000 from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology's Smart Infrastructure Pilots initiative for the two-year trial. Boldyn Networks will install 10.4 kilometers of fiber-optic line in support of 20 smart columns throughout the borough. Each column enables Wi-Fi connectivity and high-quality CCTV images. Air quality and footfall sensors are among the customization options available with this technology.

Twenty-seven restaurants and cafes in the Surbiton neighborhood will participate in a trial of Limetrack technology. Sensors within Limetrack bins gather data for analytics of waste and emissions reduction opportunities. Limetrack also collects food waste with bin contents turned into compost and bioenergy. Participating businesses may save up to £6,000 per year through more efficient use of food, while the council diverts food waste from landfills.

Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames is partnering with North, an IoT service provider, to install sensors inside an old residential building being prepared for demolition. The sensors will be installed throughout the 130 residential properties to confirm that the building remains empty. The sensors will report any movement within the building to central systems in order to ensure that health and safety standards are met.

Kingston Council launched a four-week trial in which parking enforcement officers are equipped with body worn video cameras. The body cameras are designed to assist with crime prevention, record incidents of abuse suffered by officers, and provide evidence of each officer's conduct. The data is encrypted on the devices, transferred to a dedicated secure storage facility, and is deleted after 90 days unless it is required for an investigation.
