Bloomington, IN 1,000 Households Who Mulch Initiative

A 2020 pilot featuring 22 households found yard waste mulching reduced storm drain clogs with minimal follow-up by public works vehicles. City officials then recruited 493 households for an expanded pilot in the 2021 autumn season. The two most active neighborhoods were eligible for collection spots served by local company Earthkeepers Compost. Properties with heavy leaf coverage used an on-demand vacuum truck service to assist with removal.
