The Innovation Lab will be owned by the city, but Irvine will lease the space to the Innovation Council. The council, founded in late 2021, aims to attract, retain and support high-growth technology businesses to “help position Irvine as a regional hub for innovation and technology,” city officials said at the time of its launch.

Irvine, CA achieves community buy-in on climate change mitigation with Cool Block Program
City officials worked with 25 local organizations to recruit 200 block leaders throughout Irvine. Each leader hosts regular meetings with interested households on their block using Cool Block resources. Meetings teach residents about disaster preparedness, food waste, water conservation, and other topics before setting individual goals. A pilot fund offers $1,000 grants and no-interest loans of up to $25,000 per applicant for home energy retrofits.

Irvine, CA simplifies redemption process for recyclables with CRV residential collection pilot
Irvine residents can request collections of recyclables that qualify for California Refund Value (CRV) payments. On-demand collections can be scheduled by phone or online form. Participants opt into CRV payments by check or mobile payment app with opportunities to donate refunds. The pilot was approved as part of a statewide campaign to increase redemptions and reduce the need for additional collection sites.

Access Irvine contains a How Can We Help? tool that delivers public requests to the relevant departments. An app user can take a picture of the issue, tag the location, and select the appropriate category before sending their request. The app includes a Public Safety section with an anonymous tip feature. The Mayor's Corner video series brings updates on city issues, projects, and services to a resident's mobile device.
