The city of Portsmouth formed a broadband authority in order to provide internet connectivity to residents by creating a municipal broadband network. The city strategically installed over 300 public Wi-Fi access points to provide free broadband service for more than 1,000 public housing units. The project cost approximately $750,000 in CARES Act funding, improves telehealth services in disadvantaged neighborhoods, and serves as a proof of concept for the city's municipal broadband network.
