Virginia Beach launches online open data portal
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — The city of Virginia Beach has launched the first open government data portal in Hampton Roads. Media outlets report the portal launched Monday at data.vbgov.com. Catheryn Whitesell, director of the city's Strategy, Transparency, Innovation and Resiliency office, says the portal is part of the city's efforts to be more transparent. The website includes datasets like employee salaries, restaurant inspection results, police incidents and others. Whitesell says new data will be released every month for public access. Not all of the data on the site will be complete. Police department planning and analysis coordinator Afton Oglesby says a summary of police reports won't include every incident report — suicides, non-criminal death investigations and others will be missing.
