Milwaukee County, WI Strategy Dashboard tracks efforts at healthier and more equitable neighborhoods

County officials declared racism a public health crisis in 2019, the first such declaration by an American local government. The Strategy Dashboard gathers datasets in three categories - Institutional Practices, Living Conditions, and Health Outcomes. For example, the Institutional Practices section includes visualizations of workforce demographics and ARPA funding allocations. County departments use the dashboard and a health and equity framework for inclusive program development.

Baltimore, MD evaluates violence prevention efforts with its Public Safety Accountability Dashboard

The Microsoft Power BI dashboard supports accountability requirements in the Comprehensive Violence Prevention Plan. The Crime Summary tab provides year-to-year comparisons of homicides, violent crimes, and property crimes by neighborhood or police district. Interactive crime and arrest maps track data in both categories back to 2012. The dashboard includes a case disposition graph and a map of Community Violence Intervention partners.

Nashville and Davidson County, TN tracks neighborhood improvement projects with interactive map

The Neighborhoods Improvement Tracker presents a color-coded display of capital projects across Nashville. Eligible projects feature budgets of at least $50,000 and a use-life of at least 10 years. Planning officials divided 800 improvement projects at the tracker's introduction into categories including community safety and education. Tracker users click on each pinpoint for project details such as work completed percentage, budget, and estimated completion date.

Austin, TX Warrant Amnesty initiative builds community trust in criminal justice system

The month-long program seeks resolution for city-issued citations and warrants for local traffic violations. Participants visiting the Municipal Court or Community Court can waive their warrant fees by starting payment plans, applying for hardship waivers, or participating in community service. Municipal judges and prosecutors are available to answer questions as they review each case. Austin's pre-pandemic warrant amnesties resolved 37,500 warrants and tickets over three years.

The Municipal Workforce tab compares monthly demographic data for public employees compared to city residents. A Senior Leadership section digs deeper into these comparisons for the Mayor's Cabinet and department heads. Dashboard users learn more about salary disparities by race in the Salary tab. Additional features include a map of employees by ZIP code and a year-to-year demographic analysis back to Fiscal Year 2019.

Philadelphia, PA increases transparency of campaign finance reporting with a new dashboard

Philadelphia built the dashboard in-house after working with an external vendor through 2019. The Campaign Finance Dashboard supports searches for city candidate transactions, debts, and contributions by ZIP code. Additional features include visualizations of filer categories, comparisons of competing candidate finances, and searches for filers by ward. The Office of Innovation and Technology produced a video tutorial and documentation for dashboard use.

What's Up Welland? is a weekly podcast exploring the ins and outs of the local community. The 43-episode first season began with a chat about the upcoming year with the mayor. Municipal employees were interviewed about topics like water treatment, proxy voting, and civil infrastructure. The podcast hosts also explored visiting attractions like the Femmes du Feu Creations circus and local fixtures like the Jackfish baseball team.

Fairfax County, VA simplifies search for retail food inspection reports with new mapping tool

The interactive map tracks health inspections of more than 3,500 permitted eateries. Users can search by restaurant name or open pinpoints from the map interface. The Retail Food Inspection Report app presents the last two years of reports for each location as downloadable PDFs. Fairfax County leveraged existing GIS tools for increased transparency of work done by the Environmental Health team. This map also improves customer service by eliminating FOIA requests for inspection records.

Birmingham City Council, GB presents local data trends on The City Observatory platform

Local officials worked with Birmingham City University during the open data platform's development. Portal users access a growing list of data sets by searching keywords or selecting from 10 themes like deprivation and housing. The City Observatory highlights data dashboards on topics including the Homes for Ukraine and Clean Air Zone initiatives. Each dashboard combines maps, visualizations, and topic overviews for easier use by residents.

Sacramento, CA ARPA Community Impact Hub increases transparency about federal recovery spending

City officials introduced the Hub to track projects paid for by $112 million in federal ARPA funds. The online portal explains five priority areas for funding including commercial corridor revitalization and the creative economy. Hub users learn about budgeted and spent funds for each priority area through easy-to-read visualizations. Additional features of the ARPA Community Impact Hub include project-by-project budgets and stories about the city's recovery from the pandemic.

San Jose, CA improves public access to police misconduct complaints with its SB 1421 Records Portal

California's SB 1421 expands public records access to complaints about officer-involved shootings and bodily injury cases. The Mayor's Office of Technology and Innovation and the Independent Police Auditor developed a portal for complaint searches dating back to 2000. Users can peruse a list of the most recent complaints or filter by complaint type and date. The SB 1421 Records Portal will hosts complaints related to discriminatory behavior, unlawful searches, and use of excessive force by 2023.
