Cary, NC evaluates Connected Autonomous Shuttle Supporting Innovation at Bond Park
Town officials partnered with the North Carolina Department of Transportation on the three-month CASSI pilot. An eight-seat, all-electric Navya shuttle completes four stops between the Community Center and the Senior Center each weekday. The CASSI operates at a maximum speed of 12 miles per hour. Autonomous operation is made possible by using LiDAR, GPS, and live video footage with an onboard attendant available for manual operation if necessary.

Project leaders recorded a video explaining the project, timeline, and detour route using qcard. Greenway users scan QR codes along the 2.8-mile detour route to access the explanatory video. The qcard video is complemented by a dedicated website for the project with an interactive map and a visual timeline.

Cary, NC is adding IoT connectivity and connected vehicle applications to its traffic control system
The Town of Cary is launching a $2 million project to upgrade its traffic control system with IoT connectivity. By using the new cellular vehicle-to-everything network (C-V2X Network), emergency vehicles will be able to safely control traffic signals. The technology is estimated to save first responders approximately 10 seconds per stoplight. The project will add connected vehicle applications to 205 traffic signals, 100 school safety beacons, 15 pedestrian crosswalks and railroad crossings.

The town is using smart water level sensors and rain gauges to collect real-time data on potential flooding events. Before the installation of these sensors, residents would have to call and report flooding. The IoT sensors allow the town the monitor water levels, predict flooding, and proactively reroute traffic to protect residents.
