Two batteries constructed from recycled car batteries were installed at the city's Eastcroft Depot. The batteries hold 1,200 kWh of energy generated by the facility's solar panels. A fleet of 40 plug-in electric vehicles and six lorries is charged by 40 vehicle-to-grid chargers. The system provides entirely renewable energy to city vehicles with minimal use of the electrical grid. This pilot is the first of its type in the country and one of four supported by Interreg North-West Europe.

Exterior doors at the transit station only open when buses are fully parked; thus reducing heat loss while keeping commuters safe and warm.
