Port Phillip, VIC Clarendon Street Arcade strengthens social cohesion through custom arcade games

Project partner RMIT University's Future Play Lab developed five arcade cabinets for the 13-week project. Students, artists, and game designers integrated local culture into interactive experiences for Clarendon Street visitors. Free gameplay allowed single or multiple players to learn about Aboriginal culture, local music, and the natural environment. The cabinets were available from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm each day so that patrons could also frequent local businesses.

Port Phillip, VIC diverts organic waste from landfills with FOGO hub and curbside collection pilots

The council installed communal food and garden organics (FOGO) hubs at three public locations for six months. Public hubs allowed residents with limited space to keep compostable materials out of general waste bins. Households in the Elwood suburb were selected for an 11-month FOGO waste collection pilot because they had enough space for extra bins. Collected waste was sent to a Cleanaway processing facility and turned into compost for public parks.

Port Phillip, VIC installs Vivacity sensor platform for smart planning of local transportation

Council officials worked with Vivacity to place traffic sensors near heavily traveled roads and paths. The sensors gather anonymized data on pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists who pass target lines. Vivacity's dashboard analyzes daily counts for choke points and peak times throughout the city. Port Phillip will use these tools for data-driven transportation decisions that accommodate a projected 23% growth in population by 2027.

Port Phillip, VIC establishes Earned Value Management tracking for capital project improvements

Earned Value Management (EVM) uses budgets, schedules, and daily data to track a capital project's health. Stakeholders review maps and graphs on a single page that summarizes progress in objective terms. Council planners and developers use EVM to anticipate cash flow challenges, project changes, and remedial steps needed to stay on track. Port Phillip plans to expand EVM use to city services thanks to early successes and limited resources necessary for expansion.
