Council officials created Ireland's first publicly owned energy company called Heatworks to facilitate the project. The network uses free excess heat from an Amazon Web Services facility along with heat pumps. Heatworks initially provides low-cost heating for 50,000 square meters of public and commercial space with expansion in the plans by 2024. Tallaght District Heating Network eliminates 1,500 tons per year in carbon emissions created by conventional heating methods.
