Local officials work with natural resource specialists from four iwi - tribes - during the one-year pilot. Weekly consultations shape revisions to the Tairāwhiti Resource Management Plan (TRM) based on expertise about topics like housing and water quality. A co-design process ensures that the TRMP and the council's Long-Term Plan meet the needs of all district residents. Working relationships built during the pilot also help the district anticipate national Resource Management Act changes.

Gisborne District Council partnered with Waka Kotahi, Fire and Emergency NZ, Police, and the St John charity organisation to launch the "Make the Call" local road safety campaign. The campaign involved local celebrities and the "Make the Call" message was shared in the media, at summer events, and during roadside checks.

Gisborne District Council improved its Rates and Valuations webpage by updating the property search function. The tool now allows users to search property values, rates, and rate charges on any property in the Tairāwhiti district. Users can search through property data from the last five years and directly compare annual rates. The Council designed the tool to help anyone buying, selling, or renovating a home or business to better understand the value of their property.

Gisborne District Council, NZ launched Operation Manaaki to assist older residents in COVID lockdown
Gisborne District Council launched Operation Manaaki to guarantee that senior residents remain informed during the COVID-19 lockdown. The goal of the operation is for the Council to call every resident over the age of 65, approximately 7,000 people, to evaluate their needs and concerns during the pandemic. Any issues identified by these calls will be addressed by the Emergency Coordination Centre in order to provide this vulnerable population with assistance.
