Saanich, BC seeks public input on proposed Financial Plan with budget education tool
Saanich used the Ethelo platform to build a budget education tool for its 2023-2027 Financial Plan. Local residents enter their assessed property value and find out what taxes are collected and how they are used. The tool educates users in eight budget categories and shows how budget increases or decreases impact their property taxes. District officials will consult resident suggestions and comments on budget explainers when finalizing the plan.

Saanich, BC prepares for future challenges with Neighbour to Neighbour Resilience Initiative
District officials are recruiting three groups of up to 12 residents each for the first N2N cohort. Group members learn about climate action, emergency preparedness, and conservation during three workshops. Each N2N group can apply for grants of up to CAD 500 for the development of community activities related to these three topics. This initial cohort will help Saanich determine how to maximize the impacts of volunteerism and public funds on community resiliency.

Saanich, BC encourages resident contributions to environmental plans with Community StoryMap
Local officials are updating a decade-old Urban Forest Strategy and creating a State of Biodiversity Report. Residents provide feedback on their favorite natural areas and green spaces in need of improvement through the Community StoryMap survey. The questionnaire asks participants to pin locations on an interactive map and supply information about their suggested places. The Community StoryMap presents favorite places as green stars and needs-improvement places as red diamonds.

Saanich, BC promotes sustainable mobility for residents with E-bike Incentive Pilot Program
Saanich approved a $200,000 CAD fund for rebates on e-bike purchases by local households. Participants purchased new e-bikes for $1,800 CAD or more from partner shops. The program featured a $350 CAD rebate level for all income levels and income-qualified rebates of $800 CAD and $1,600 CAD. Local officials estimate the program will eliminate up to 2,000 tons of carbon emissions by 2030 while bringing e-bikes within reach for low-income residents.

Saanich, BC Fire Departments in three municipalities agree to align fire services and automatic aid
The District of Saanich Fire Department has partnered with the Victoria and Oak Bay Fire Departments to ensure the alignment of fire services across the three municipalities. Each department signed a mutual firefighting agreement in order to increase resource capacity, firefighter training opportunities, and coordinated responses to high-risk events. Additionally, the departments adopted an automatic aid model in order to eliminate the need for departments to formally request assistance.

The WIM program focused on improving injury reporting, return to work opportunities, and alternate duties for employees returning to work. These positive WIM changes created safer and healthier local work environments by providing additional support to sick and injured employees while also reducing claim costs and insurance amounts.
