The City of Boston is enacting a new ordinance which will allow home cooks to obtain residential kitchen permits. The new law will permit home cooks to make and sell "cottage food" out of their own kitchens. The term "cottage food" refers to food that doesn't easily spoil such as pastries, tortillas, dried fruit, pasta, cakes, granola, etc. Applicants will have to take a safety course and receive allergens awareness training to receive a license from the city.

State law already allows home cooks to sell shelf-stable foods, but leaves it up to cities and towns to implement their own regulations. Until now, Boston had no formal process to obtain residential kitchen permits.

The council voted to change city law to allow people to sell "cottage foods" out of their own kitchens. That includes things like cookies, pastries, cakes, pies, churros, tortillas, dried fruit, pasta, granola, and jams.
