Boston, MA develops generative AI playbook for civic engagement
Boston's city government has partnered with the Civic Data Design Lab to develop the Generative AI Playbook for Civic Engagement to address the challenges of analyzing vast amounts of resident feedback and improving public participation in decision-making. By integrating AI tools with existing data sources like 311 service requests, surveys, and community meetings, the initiative enables real-time analysis to identify trends, such as geographic patterns in complaints about potholes.

This approach not only streamlines administrative processes by automating data summarization and visualization—such as generating instant maps during meetings—but also enhances transparency and trust by making government insights more accessible to residents. As a result, Boston has seen improved community engagement and faster problem resolution, setting a model for other U.S. cities to leverage AI ethically while mitigating risks like bias and privacy concerns.
