Coral Gables, FL integrates ChatGPT into its Artificial Intelligence Digital Assistant chatbot
ChatGPT will automatically update the chatbot algorithm's datasets based on user requests. This means that a local resident seeking information on city services receives the most current information from AIDA. The Coral Gables Innovation and Technology (CGIT) team will focus on a human-centered design for the newest version of AIDA prior to public testing in 2024. CGIT also anticipates the integration of a smarter AIDA with Salesforce for an internal chatbot.

Oakland, CA relies on artificial intelligence for early wildlfire detections during N5 Sensors pilot
Ten ChemNodes installed throughout the city gather data on air quality, particulates, and temperature. An AI-enabled platform evaluates potential threats up to two miles away and alerts the Oakland Fire Department of wildfires by text or email. ChemNodes don't require direct cellular connections and store enough solar energy for up to 10 days of operation. The two-year pilot will test response times during fires while gathering data for targeted fire prevention measures.

Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council, GB creates smart intersection with Vivacity road sensors
The council began the installation of 65 Vivacity sensors throughout the borough in 2022. A cluster of sensors in Brierley Hill will support a smart intersection at Venture Way and Mill Street by the end of 2023. Sensor data feed into Vivacity's Smart Junction platform for timely light changes based on current motor vehicle, bike, and pedestrian traffic. The AI-powered sensor network assists borough officials during the development of local solutions for traffic congestion and safety.

Carpentaria, QLD partners with LGAQ Lab on AI-powered system for road flooding detection
The state's innovation lab developed an AI supervisor tool for the shire's flood camera network. This tool monitors real-time footage and sends email alerts to designated council officers when roads are threatened. Carpentaria previously sent officers to identify flooding in outlying areas, thus requiring drives of up to 10 hours. The pilot provides a blueprint for other Queensland councils and determines other uses of the supervisor for Carpentaria's operations.

Cambridgeshire County Council, GB pilots AI-powered traffic sensors at East Road in Cambridge
The county's traffic team and the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) installed Starling Technologies detectors for the trial. The detector's cameras discern travel paths and speeds through intersections by different modes of transportation. Traffic lights switch based on real-time determinations about road and sidewalk congestion once fully implemented. County officials will evaluate the potential impacts of the technology on traffic flow for cyclists and large groups of pedestrians.

New York, NY creates comprehensive view of local road use with trial of Viva's Near Miss sensors
The city's Department of Transportation manually gathers traffic counts at random intersections throughout the year. Viva's AI-powered technology replaces these counts at 12 intersections during the pilot. Near Miss discerns nine types of transportation including scooters, buses, and pedestrians. Real-time data on travel speed, near-miss events, and travel paths are sent to an internal dashboard. City officials will use Near Miss results when evaluating traffic safety and street design efforts.

Oregon City, OR adopts CityRover pothole detection system for improved street maintenance
The city's Public Works team installed CityRover on a street sweeper for comprehensive coverage of local streets. CityRover records footage ahead of the vehicle and identifies potential potholes using artificial intelligence. City officials view analytics on pothole severity within images sent to the CityRover dashboard. This AI-powered system combines with community service requests for a more responsive approach to road repairs.

Sunshine Coast, QLD deploys drones and artificial intelligence for invasive tree management
An alternative treatment trial seeks the removal of broad-leaf pepper trees from an area between Wurtulla and Point Cartwright. Drone flight footage of the area is fed into an AI platform trained by Queensland University of Technology researchers. Multispectral sensors identify unexploded ordnance dating to World War II military training in the trial zone. Sunshine Coast will evaluate if this mapping technique can be applied to other areas as part of its Invasive Weeds Project.

Christchurch City Council, NZ collaborates on the development of SeaSpotter citizen science app
The Smart Christchurch team sought a solution for insufficient data about endangered mammal populations. A partnership with the Department of Conservation, MAUI63, and others resulted in an AI-powered app for public use. SeaSpotter users can take pictures and relay information about mammal sightings using the app's chat function. Citizen scientists learn about local animals while supplying real-time data to university and agency researchers.

Scottsdale, AZ automates and improves water conservation efforts with WC-Tool app
The city's Water Conservation Office worked with Arizona State University and AWS on the app's development. This new tool analyzes satellite images, GIS maps, and other data for quick analysis of a lot's water needs. Conservation specialists can consult with residents about water budgeting by phone rather than conducting in-person inspections. The WC-Tool also standardizes consultations that previously required manual reviews of land use plans and water needs.
