Auckland Council, NZ Future Fit tool for carbon footprint reduction expands into business community
Auckland Council introduced Future Fit in 2019 as an online tool for residents to measure and reduce their environmental impacts. A recently introduced version encourages emission-reduction efforts among corporate teams and small businesses. Future Fit uses questionnaires and national data to calculate personal footprints at the outset of participation. Companies track real-time footprint changes as employees complete 30 activities in six categories.

Auckland Council, NZ helps families facing high utility bills with home energy assessment pilot
Auckland and the Support for Energy Education in Communities Programme funded the three-month pilot for NZD 215,000. A trio of local energy assessors was trained to advise residents on energy consumption behaviors. Energy assessors replaced old lightbulbs with Ecobulb LED bulbs in 790 households. Participating households also received high-efficiency shower heads and heat pump filter cleanings when necessary. The pilot saves an estimated NZD 481,000 per year through reduced energy waste.

The council's Emergency Management team found the growing group of Korean owners lacked resources in their own language. The Work Ready guide contains resources like an emergency checklist, a business continuity plan template, and a response plan template. Guide users also learn about the impacts of natural disasters and public health emergencies on their businesses. Project leaders worked with the Korean Society to ensure accurate translation for the guide's online and print versions.

Council utility Watercare and University of Auckland researchers began the project with workshops across four areas of the city. Thirty Watercare customers representative of the city's demographics shared their views about the local water supply. A 40-member Citizens' Assembly will work toward consensus on the question, "What should be the next source (or sources) of water for Auckland?" Project leaders support informed decisionmaking with policy and scientific briefs each Assembly session.

Ruru - Conservation Information System gathers 80 datasets from council departments into a single database. Auckland's Bio Information staff finds overlapping or conflicting needs in areas like pest control, native species management, and engagement programs. Automated spatial analytics produce data-rich maps about the council's conservation strategies. The system's permission settings limit contractors to relevant datasets as they work on Bio Information projects.

Auckland Council implemented CXone, a new contact management system, to provide more efficient customer service for residents. The CXone platform automatically directs customers to the best person for their specific request to provide more effective service delivery. The Council is also trialing a process in which customers can enter information into the system while waiting on hold. This process will allow agents to directly access relevant information at the beginning of each call.

Auckland Council, NZ installed a new tide gauge to measure rising sea levels and climate change
Auckland Council installed a new tide gauge at a local reserve to measure rising sea levels as an indicator of climate change. The tide gauge directly compares the water level of individual tides against historic high tides, current-day mean high tides and projected high tides. The data collected from the tide gauge is provided to the Auckland King Tides Initiative in order to showcase the effects of climate change and the potential impact of extreme weather events on the community.
