The pilot combined high-resolution satellite imagery with an AI-powered platform to identify 12,000 trees. City staffers and Green City Watch were able to catalog tree ages, sizes, and conditions. Tree health was evaluated against three vegetation indices as well as existing tree management data. Boston will use the digital inventory to anticipate tree maintenance tasks instead of relying on 311 calls and manual inspections.
