Eugene, OR Love Food Not Waste program transforms food scraps into valuable compost
The city of Eugene partnered with licensed garbage haulers and private organics processors to launch the Love Food Not Waste (LFNW) pilot program to transform food scraps into valuable compost. As an incentive for business participation, commercial customers that divert food waste through LFNW get a 20% reduction in their garbage service fee. The city trains participating employees and provides resources at no cost. The participating businesses also receive recognition through LFNW marketing.

The Eugene Springfield Fire Department established the Young Women's Fire Camp to address the lack of local female firefighters. The free five-day program uses hands-on training activities including extinguishing live fires, emergency medical services, rappelling, self-defense, and vehicle extrication to help young women, ages 16 to 19, develop confidence and leadership skills. Participants also engage in conversations about peer pressure, societal pressures, self-image, and mental health.

The city-developed app provides easy-to-use water system data for the Industrial Source Control Team. App users find businesses near the impacted area on an interactive map. The Spill Tracing App evaluates the scope of hazardous materials within the local wastewater system. Team members use this data to develop immediate and long-term remediation efforts that adequately address hazardous situations.
