Hastings District Council is implementing a range of road safety measures to deal with traffic speed and volume around four local primary schools. This pilot programme was developed in collaboration with the schools and designed to make it easier for students to safely get to school. The Council is using a "tactical urbanization" approach to create people-friendly spaces around local schools which will encourage alternatives forms of transportation.

Hastings District Council, NZ launches a mobile app allowing residents to remotely access libraries
Hastings District Council launched the Hastings District Libraries mobile app to allow residents to access library services remotely. Users can digitally browse library collections, setup an account, renew items, download e-books and audio books, place a hold item for pick-up, view fines and fees, etc. The app also allows family members to link their digital library cards together to easily manage multiple accounts.

Hastings District Council, NZ using CamperMate app to collect online donations from campers
Hastings District Council is using the CamperMate app to collect online donations from overnight freedom campers. The voluntary contributions are used to fund the maintenance costs associated with local freedom camping parks and reserves. The Council transitioned to the mobile app in response to repeated vandalism of the physical donation boxes. The app also lists camping spots, public toilets, petrol stations, and other facilities across the region.

Hastings District Council, NZ and Napier City Council host annual HazMobile hazardous waste service
Hastings District Council partners with Napier City Council to co-host the HazMobile service for local residents. HazMobile is a free annual service that the Councils provide to help local households safely dispose of their hazardous waste. Residents are required to register for the HazMobile event and list the specific hazardous waste they are going to bring for collection. The Council websites list the eligible items including oil, fuel, cleaners, paint, chemicals, etc.
