Cumbria County Council launched an online booking system for its local Household Waste Recycling Centre sites to reduce traffic in the surrounding areas. Residents must use the online booking system to pre-schedule a 30-minute timeslot before disposing waste at the sites. The roads and sites were overwhelmed with traffic due to the increased demand for waste disposal following the COVID-19 lockdowns. Requiring appointments allowed the city to maintain safe social distancing at the sites.
