Chemnitz, SL Reusable Cup System Single-Use Container Waste

Chemnitz purchased 5,600 Relocal reusable cups for 40 restaurants and cafes in the program's initial group. A one-euro deposit provides consumer access to a 0.3-liter cup and lid made from recycled materials. The system asks consumers to return and receive cups at participating businesses, thus eliminating a common source of landfill waste. Municipal officials maintain open enrollment in the system ahead of a 2023 federal law requiring reusable container use by catering companies.
