City & County of Swansea, GB trials Houses as Power Stations initiative on council housing
City & County of Swansea, GB Houses as Power Stations
Complete
The collaboration with Cardiff University focused on cutting energy bills for six council houses in Craig-cefn-parc. Each house was outfitted with rooftop solar panels and a battery to store excess energy. Contractors added ground-source pumps for low-cost heating. The pilot also added traditional upgrades like new doors, weather-proof windows, and exterior insulation. Swansea and Cardiff University completed these upgrades over 18 months.
Newsworthy
Project Succeeded
The average weekly energy bill for a participating home shrank from £71 to £3. A proposal to expand Homes as Power Stations to 10,000 homes is under consideration.
