Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, GB partners with local firm on reduced-emission pavement
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council, GB Local Pavement
The borough and Rotherham-based SteelPhalt applied climate-friendly asphalt onto Broom Lane. SteelPhalt's Kraft Lignin binder consists of tree waste, thus replacing bitumen binding used in past road projects. This swap represented 5% of the material used in the project but eliminated the significant emissions created by bitumen. Rotherham trialed Kraft Lignin as part of a £24 Million to 2024 Roads Programme with potential applications in future projects.
