Shoalhaven and the University of NSW's SMaRT Centre coordinated on the MICROfactorie's development. This new area within the West Nowra Waste and Recycling Depot focuses on waste-to-product processes. Glass is converted into home building materials like tiles and countertops, while plastic products are turned into 3D printing filament. The council estimates 14 tons of plastic and 450 tons of glass will be reused every year.

Green Ceramics MICROfactorieTM Comes to West Nowra - Shoalhaven City Council

Shoalhaven City Council has received grant funding of $500,000 from the Environment Trust to enter into a partnership with University of NSW’s Sustainable Materials & Technology Centre (UNSW SMaRT Centre) to establish a Green Ceramics MICROfactorieTM at West Nowra.

On Monday 1 November, Shoalhaven City Council Mayor Amanda Findley joined University of NSW Professor Veena, Federal Minister for the Environment Sussan Ley and Senator for New South Wales Jim Molan to visit the West Nowra Waste and Recycling Depot where a new ‘waste to product’ MICROfactorie will be built.
