The City of Edinburgh Council, GB tracks waste management practices with bin sensor network

The City of Edinburgh Council, GB Waste Bin Sensor Network

In Progress

The citywide project will add 11,000 sensors to communal waste bins by summer 2023. Bin sensors detect real-time fill levels and alert the waste management team when collections are necessary. Edinburgh will also analyze data on how often bins are used and when they are emptied. The first phase of the project includes bins near The Meadows and shops along Pitt Street. City officials received funding from Zero Waste Scotland and the European Regional Development Fund for the project.
