Toowoomba, QLD evaluates best practices for mattress diversion from landfills with recycling pilot

Toowoomba, QLD Mattress Recycling Pilot Diversion Landfill

In Progress

The Greater Toowoomba Waste Management Facility accepts mattress drop-offs by local residents. Metal springs from mattresses are stripped and sold for scrap metal. Waste management staffers are evaluating if mattress foam and fabric can be repurposed in the future. The six-week pilot evaluates the amount of time and resources necessary for additional mattress recycling. Council leaders believe a fully realized process could remove 3,000 mattresses from landfills per year.
