Porirua City Council, NZ improves biodiversity and water quality with Streamside Planting Programme

Porirua City Council, NZ Streamside Planting Program

In Progress

The city, Ngāti Toa, and Sustainable Coastlines established a goal of six million new plants near streams by 2041. Landowners with vacant green space adjacent to Porirua's 588 kilometers of streams can request plants, fencing, and maintenance from the council. A GIS mapping system grades and prioritizes identified streamside land for future plantings. The council-wide planting scheme reduces sediment entering Porirua Harbour and creates healthy habitats for wildlife.
