Port Phillip, VIC diverts organic waste from landfills with FOGO hub and curbside collection pilots

Port Phillip, VIC Curbside Collection Hub Waste Pilots

In Progress

The council installed communal food and garden organics (FOGO) hubs at three public locations for six months. Public hubs allowed residents with limited space to keep compostable materials out of general waste bins. Households in the Elwood suburb were selected for an 11-month FOGO waste collection pilot because they had enough space for extra bins. Collected waste was sent to a Cleanaway processing facility and turned into compost for public parks.

Food and garden waste (FOGO) - City of Port Phillip

FOGO stands for Food Organics and Garden Organics; that's your food scraps and waste from the garden. Based on our 2019 waste audits, these organics make up 46 per cent of the waste in our bins at home.

Project Succeeded

City officials extended the communal hub pilot through January 2023 with three additional locations. This pilot also made Port Phillip a finalist in the Waste category of the Keep Victoria Beautiful Sustainable Cities Awards 2021. The Elwood FOGO pilot was also extended after a successful year in operation.
