Summary
With around 130 projects ongoing at any one time, Riverside’s Innovation and Technology Department realized in 2015 that it needed a way to improve IT governance and better manage its initiatives. Rather than buy a new solution, the department decided to take advantage of an existing investment and built a tool using Microsoft SharePoint.
They created an in-house portal called “The Hive,” a workflow tool that helps users track projects and improves communications between stakeholders. The Hive proved so effective that other departments within the city quickly expressed interest, and the IT team has since scaled it up to serve almost every city agency.
The scope of the tool has grown considerably since its inception. For example, The Hive now helps department leaders drive outcomes by tracking progress on performance goals laid out in Riverside’s strategic plan.
The Hive significantly boosts productivity and transparency throughout the organization, and the IT team is continuing to build on its functionality. Currently, the team is developing a new dashboard that will make the tool even more intuitive and improve visibility into potential issues.
