Prince George's County, MD supports seniors and youth leaving care with a guaranteed income pilot

Thrive Prince George's is a two-year, $4 million pilot funded by the county, Greater Washington Community Foundation, and the Meyer Foundation. The program serves 85 residents aged 18 to 24 who have left the foster care system and 125 seniors. Each participant receives $800 per month throughout the pilot with no restrictions on how money is used. Local organizations CASA and UCAP administer the pilot and provide assistance with maintaining income-limited benefits.

London Royal Borough of Greenwich, GB informs care technology use with Resident Design Group

Borough officials and Rethink Partners initially spoke with 200 residents and practitioners about Assistive Technology Enabled Care (ATEC) options. The Resident Design Group is a 12-member group meeting monthly to turn initial findings into real-world solutions. The borough recruited residents with experiences in social care or providing care to loved ones for the group. Participants receive vouchers during the co-design process with additional feedback sought after ATEC implementation.

East Sussex County Council, GB conducts RoboPets pilot for residents with early-stage dementia

The one-year pilot delivered 50 robotic dogs or cats to residents working with the county's Occupational Therapy team. RoboPets provide companionship for dementia patients as they experience worsening symptoms. The realistic companions also act as conversation starters between residents, carers, and loved ones. A successful rollout led East Sussex County Council to recruit 50 more participants in need of RoboPets.

Gedling Borough Council, GB supports independent living for seniors with Bath Out initiative

The program sought 15 senior residents in Netherfield interested in converting bathrooms into wet rooms. Project partner Longhurst Group worked with each participant on design options including walk-in showers, grab bars, and accessible sinks. Gedling Borough Council covered Bath Out's £105,000 cost with money received from the Better Care Fund. Each conversion will save an estimated £73,000 by reducing hospital and supported housing stays caused by falls.

This first-in-Australia program seeks retired residents interested in temporary or part-time work. Workers and businesses register for free through the council's online survey. Participating seniors indicate their ideal schedule, qualifications, and professional skills. Local businesses receive contact information for qualified participants and handle interviews with prospective workers. An autumn 2023 pilot attracted 85 workers and 50 companies, thus leading to a second round in summer 2023.

Isle of Wight Council, GB responds to non-emergency falls with Wightcare Community Falls Response

The council and Isle of Wight Trust Ambulance Service partnered on a dedicated team for in-home falls by seniors. First responders to 999 or 111 calls determine if falls require ambulance trips and contact the team for falls without serious injury. Team members respond in an average of one hour, thus eliminating the possibility of long periods on the floor. Wightcare Community Falls Response reduces hospital admittance rates and better allocates emergency resources.

The first-in-Denmark technology tracks movement patterns of elderly residents through in-room cameras. Anonymized data of suspected falls and restless sleeping result in text alerts to Kildemarkscentret staff.
