Ada County, ID Sheriff's Office uses drones in investigation

Complete

The Ada County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) uses drones as necessary in long-term investigations and public safety emergencies. These drones, which cost the county about $8,900, are operated by nine ACSO deputies and piloted with respect to Idaho Code, state law, and public concerns.

Project Succeeded

The drones have helped capture a fugitive who was evading arrest and also helped ACSO rescue a pair of elk hunters who got lost in the Boise Foothills. ACSO has been very vocal about what the drones can and cannot be used for, and they have made it clear that resident privacy will not be invaded via the drones. There are very strict regulations under Idaho Code for how the unmanned aircraft can be used by law enforcement, and ACSO is following that code precisely.
