Banyule, VIC IoT Smart Cities Asset Management Initiatives pursue council goals through technology

Banyule's Asset Plan 2022-2023 calls for an understanding of the present and future of public assets. Sixteen LoRaWAN gateways and 133 IoT devices were installed across six types of city assets. Sixty-one sensors in the drainage system monitor water flow for potential blockages and flooding. An automated road assessment sensor tracks issues ranging from potholes to graffiti. Additional devices measure water levels under bridges, parking lot usage, and temperatures in council buildings.

Banyule, VIC shapes citywide collection program with Food and Garden Waste Community Trial

Council leaders established a goal of eliminating landfill waste by 2030. Five hundred homes participated in a two-month organic waste diversion pilot that moves the city toward this goal. Each participant received a kitchen caddy and curbside bin for weekly collection. Banyule reduced general waste collections from weekly to biweekly due to decreases in bin fill levels. A post-trial survey generated data on behavioral changes and collection experiences for program development.
