Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council, GB continues net-zero mission with biofuel pilot for equipment

Twenty-five council lawnmowers switched from diesel to used vegetable oil for the first part of the pilot. Biofuelled operations during the summer led to an estimated emissions reduction of 90 tons. Borough officials approved the installation of an on-site biofuel tank as well as an extension of the pilot to tipper trucks and street sweepers. Project leaders estimate a 90% reduction in annual equipment emissions with full implementation, which would contribute to a 2025 net-zero goal.

Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council, GB installed fresh-air cooling to reduce council emissions

The Civic Offices use a fresh-air cooling system to maintain a server room temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. Outside air cools IT equipment at external temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius and below. An evaporative cooling process keeps servers from overheating above 30 degrees. The system uses enough power for a fan that draws outside air into the room. Council officials purchased the system to reduce energy costs by £9,500 per year and work toward carbon neutrality by 2030.
