Braunschweig, NI approaches goal of gigabit connectivity for every public school

Gigabit equipment will be installed across all of Braunschweig's public schools by 2023. Work teams are completing the connectivity project in multiple phases to accompany other renovation projects. An equipment loan program offers tablets and laptops to low-income students with limited computer access at home. Braunschweig also works with Deutsche Telekom to provide free home Wi-Fi hotspots necessary for homework completion.

Braunschweig, NI advances staff mobility program with shared electric vehicle fleet

Braunschweig approved the purchase of electric cars and e-bikes for use across city departments. A six-vehicle fleet in the city hall courtyard provides quick access for official trips. Public employees are encouraged to ride e-bikes after the renovation of the hall's cellar into storage and changing rooms. An in-development app will ask city workers if they can walk, bike, or ride transit for assigned tasks before allowing car reservations.

Braunschweig, NI swaps sand bags for Mobildeich flood protection system along waterfront

Mobildeich inflates durable hoses using early floodwaters and stays in place thanks to a secure tarp. The system is easy to unroll, fits into tight spaces, and handles water levels up to 3.5 meters. Braunschweig will use Mobildeich along an established flood defense line near the Oker River. Municipal officials approved the system to prevent a minimum potential cost of 23 million euros per major flooding event.
