Brimbank, VIC encourages new voices to lead community conversations with BRIMBANK LIVE project

The LIVE FM channel presents interviews and performances about issues relevant to the city's diverse population. Thirteen participants received training on interviewing, writing, and audio production prior to their shows. BRIMBANK LIVE premiered with 30 hours of live broadcasts by young residents in July 2020. Community members benefitted from discussions of mental health, isolation, and respect for other cultures during COVID-19 lockdowns.

Brimbank, VIC and East Gippsland share planning resources during post-bushfire recovery

Planning staffers sought additional resources for a permit application boom after the 2019-2020 bushfires. The councils approved a Memorandum of Understanding for the shared use of planners across both communities. Brimbank and East Gippsland integrated IT systems for easier communication about their planning permit pipelines. Knowledge exchanges exposed planners to city and shire development challenges not found in their respective communities.

Brimbank and Swinburne University of Technology attached stereo vision cameras to waste collection vehicles. Each system gathers 3D imagery on street assets including road signs, curbs, and bus stops. A cloud platform evaluates real-time images for necessary repairs. Maintenance teams receive notifications from the platform and submit work orders on their phones. This technology creates an automated and reliable process for identifying maintenance needs.

Council leaders worked with VU Innovations to design a nine-week virtual program for emerging small businesses. Each Master Class is taught by Entrepreneurs in Residence at Victoria University in an informal format ideal for collaboration. Participating startups receive guidance on intellectual property, licensing, and other legal topics during a final workshop. Cul-ti-vate complements the council's existing business development partnership with iHarvest Coworking Sunshine.

The project uses an asphalt mix containing recycled glass sourced from a recycling facility in Laverton North. A two-year resurfacing project will evaluate the mix's costs, durability, and impact on glass in provincial landfills. Brimbank officials are coordinating with the Australian Road Research Board and the Victorian Department of Transport on the pilot.
