Busselton, WA funds resident-led community projects during inaugural You Choose pilot
Busselton created a $100,000 AUD You Choose fund with up to $20,000 AUD available per selected project. Applications were reviewed for safety, legality, and impact on community resiliency by city staffers. Twenty-six projects ranging from computer lessons for seniors to a FireWise demonstration garden reached the final ballot. City residents were asked to complete online ballots during a one-month voting period. Winning projects will be implemented by June 30, 2023.

The PowerBank in Vasse acts as a battery for participating households with solar panels. Stored energy during the day is consumed by homes in the evenings. Any excess energy at the end of the day is sold back to the local grid for a fee shared among pilot participants. Households pay up to $1.90 AUD per day in subscription fees in exchange for access to the PowerBank. Western Power funded the initial installation of the PowerBank, while Synergy handled participant recruitment.

Busselton, WA tests solar-powered shark monitoring and alert systems at two beaches
City officials added Spectur HD5 camera systems to Castle Rock Beach and Yallingup Beach for a three-month pilot. This solar-powered system sends live video to the city when shark activity is observed. The Spectur HD5 uses an AI-enabled motion detection program to reduce false alarms and activate audio warnings to beachgoers. Busselton adopted the SharkSmart WA app to map shark activity and customize follow-up responses.
