Central Otago District Council, NZ launched a local SeatSmart programme to recycle child car seats

Central Otago District Council partnered with 3R Reimagineers to launch a local SeatSmart programme. The SeatSmart programme offers residents a subsidy to encourage recycling damaged or expired child car seats. Residents can pay a $10 recycling fee, the Council subsidizes the remaining $15, to drop-off their child car seats at a local transfer station. The subsidized recycling option was created to reduce landfill waste and prevent the continued use of damaged or expired child car seats.

Central Otago District Council, NZ partnered with TimeZone One to create a new digital shopfront

Central Otago District Council's Community and Economic Development team launched a complete redesign of the Council's website. Tourism Central Otago worked with TimeZone One developers to transform the Council's site into a digital shopfront. The new site showcases user generated social content with embedded galleries, integrate business listings with tourism platforms and mapping applications, and promotes Central Otago's regional identity.

Central Otago District Council, NZ hosted free composting workshops at local libraries

Central Otago District Council hosted free composting workshops for residents to attend at local libraries. These workshops were designed to reduce the amount of organic waste entering the landfill which the Council calculated represented 30% of the total waste. Attendees were taught the Bokashi composting technique that converts organic waste into nutrient-rich organic matter. The resulting organic matter can be utilized in gardening or composting systems.
