Columbia, SC Pathways Unit pairs mental health professionals with police officers for 911 calls
The City of Columbia launched the Pathways Initiative to improve mental health services for individuals experiencing a mental crisis, homelessness, or other forms of distress. The program pairs a South Carolina Department of Mental Health clinician with Columbia police officers to respond to 911 calls which require mental health support. The police officers assigned to the Pathways Unit are certified as Crisis Intervention Team members and crisis negotiators.

Columbia, SC pursues Columbia Life Improvement Monetary Boost pilot of guaranteed income payments
Project leaders randomly selected 200 recipients of Midlands Fatherhood Coalition services for the pilot. One hundred people receive monthly payments of $500 funded by Mayors for Guaranteed Income and private donors. The remaining 100 people act as a control group for evaluations of how guaranteed payments impact recipient families. Researchers will look at health, child wellbeing, and financial outcomes throughout the one-year pilot.
