Forbes, NSW creates world's longest stretch of solar lights with help from drought-stricken farmers

The council added 400 SBL solar-powered lights to a five-kilometer portion of the Lake Forbes trail. These Orca Solar Lighting fixtures store energy during the day used to keep trail users safe at night. Forbes hired temporary workers impacted by the area's drought to complete the installation. Local leaders included the lighting and jobs program in its Drought Communities Program of infrastructure improvements.

Forbes, NSW introduces its free water cart service in response to a regional drought

The council purchased a 2,000-liter cart available to local residents not connected to the water system. Farmers and homeowners call the regional depot to arrange cart use. Forbes also provides free water pickup at the depot to counter a multi-year drought. The council's Urban Services team uses the cart for public projects between reservations. This initiative eliminates private cartage fees that quickly add up for farms and rural households.
