Hillsboro, OR connects young talent to local busineses through December Works pilot

City officials worked with the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce to find internships during the winter holiday for residents aged 18 to 24. These short-term opportunities connected young workers to the local business community. Hillsboro modeled December Works after the existing Hillsboro Works program for summer employment. The popularity of both programs will lead to additional efforts at keeping talent in Hillsboro.

Hillsboro, OR models social distancing and active travel with Traffic Playground Pilot Projects

City officials selected Bicentennial Park and Evergreen Park for the summer pilot. Multi-use paths in Bicentennial Park now feature lane markers, a roundabout, and controlled intersections similar to a road. A modified version of the traffic playground was placed on a basketball court at Evergreen Park. Hillsboro selected these parks because they are centrally located, flat, and offered enough space to accommodate a variety of users.

Hillsboro, OR installs In-PRV smart system in water pipes to turn kinetic energy into electricity

In-PRV improves on the standard excess pressure valve by storing generated heat that is often burned off. This heat is converted into electricity sent to operate the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. Hillsboro will reduce annual carbon emissions by 162,000 pounds and produce up to 200,000 kilowatt-hours per year. City leaders worked with InPipe Energy, Portland General Electric, and Energy Trust of Oregon on this first-in-the-nation project.

Homes and businesses near Shute Park were selected for the first stage of the rollout due to low connectivity rates. HiLight provides Internet ranging from one to four gigabytes as well as digital voice service. City officials worked with the public school district to connect every building in the system to HiLight. A decade-long rollout will provide residential and commercial customers throughout the city with affordable and unlimited service.
